This book disappointed me compared to the rest of the series I've read. It felt very unnecessary and unrealistic to what I expected from the characters. They knew their evil rival was once again loose in their world but decided repeatedly that the darkness spreading was not related to him. Their entire world is dissolving into the same darkness and chaos they spent fighting through the first six books and instead of the characters acknowledging that and continuing the journey, they pretend it's not happening and turn their backs. It just felt very off compared to the first six books and also left on a cliffhanger right before a big final battle which is also unusual for this series. Typically each book wraps up a small period of time quickly but this felt like it dragged on while very little actually happened directly to the characters. I'm hoping the next book regains some of the ground that this one lost.
