I was eager to read this book but it turned out to be disappointing. I love the idea of a P&P retelling in Turkey, but the execution is just not great. My biggest problem is the main character, Eliza, whose lack of a (consistent) personality has troubled me from the beginning. Moreover, all the other characters say she's great in her job but we don't really see her doing anything impressive.
Then there's the issue with the lack of depth in all the realtionships, which is a pity bc that's one of the things I love Austen for. Friendships appear out of nowhere, trust is given but not earned, the same for dislike or sxual attraction. Overall, the characters and their interactions feel too simple, too plain, too immature. There are a lot of other things I'd like to say but I think they can be classified into the issues I already exposed.
It's a pity, honestly, because the idea is good and I think there's potential since some of the romantic scenes are genuinely cute.
