La Tombe des lucioles, by Anne Gossot, Patrick de Vos, Akiyuki Nosaka

dark emotional reflective sad fast-paced

This semi-autobiographical short story is truly heartwrenching. We follow two siblings made orphan by the war of 1939-1945 in Japan, trying to survive admist the terrible conditions they are forced to live and die in. The story is raw, explicit and with no use of lyrical prose to truly share a reality devoid of artifice. This is not a story that made me feel hopeful, which is exactly the effect desired by that Nosaka. A truly reflective read.
