I watched the film with Reece Witherspoon years ago and have been wanting to read the book ever since. This is an incredible and inspiring story of Cheryl who set out to walk the PCT all by herself with hardly any hiking experience. As it was a memoir it was described in such detail that at parts it felt like you were walking along with Cheryl. At some points like the boot incident and the horrendous snow storms it felt almost too far fetched to be real life and not a movie but it was all true. Cheryl was so honest with her past and was open about her drug addiction and her difficult marriage. The rawness of how she spoke about grief and the impact losing her mother had on her and the rest of her family. It was a really powerful book and really showcased the strength of someone going through such pain can have and the bravery to try something new and keep going even when it seems like the hardest thing at all. This was not just the journey of the PCT but a reflection of life itself and how the kindness of strangers helped her along her way who soon became friends.
