A Discovery of Witches by Deborah Harkness
3.0
My eight years ago self probably would have devoured this and 'shipped' the hell out of it with a 5-star rating. The more you submerge and expand your taste in words and books the better you become at discernment.
It is very apparent Deborah Harkness loves history, detail, and a good maze of a story. Diana and Matthew's story is entertainment. It isn't earth shattering or entirely new, but it is a cozy read in a world of characters many enjoy and crave more of...the vampire and witch variety. I wouldn't go so far as to say it is Twilight for adults, although watching the television series does have more of that flair than the book in my opinion. A Discovery of Witches has its predictable plot moments, its can't help roll your eyes and shake your head ones too, but ultimately I found enough of a homey feel between its pages I don't regret reading it. In fact I have customers I can recommend it to and know they would enjoy it far more than I have.
