Conversations with Friends by Sally Rooney

3.0

Kinda confused how I feel about this book. I liked a lot of parts of it and was hooked all the way through. Like with her other books Sally Rooney is amazing with writing complex characters and doing a deep dive into their relationships. This book really leaned into the idea of characters that aren't always likeable but are still compelling, but the narrator Frances is so cruel and self-isolating at times it becomes frustrating. The book does have her grow and reflect in the final pages, which I really appreciated, but I wished that part was longer. The ending left me really conflicted - I guess it's supposed to mimic how complicated life can be, but I was hoping for some more resolution. Normal People and Beautiful World, Where Are You were a lot more romantic/optimistic, which I think I just personally prefer, but I still found this book to be a really good read.
