I have NEVER had a book make me cry until this one. I was squinting and flinching throughout the story and by the time I got to the end I was sobbing!!!
This book was eye opening for me, it gave me a whole new perspective. I will admit, I am privileged. I am first generation Mexican-American and I do not know the struggles and fears of immigration and deportation. While I am so grateful for the opportunities I have in my life, I have never thought to ask my parents what it was like to cross the Mexican border as children themselves. I honestly feel shame to not have even considered what that must have been like for them. I have begun these conversation with the only person in my life who can answer those jarring questions… my grandmother.
This book was heart wrenching & emotional but also hopeful. I have a 9 year old child who I kept picturing in Javier’s shoes as I read this book. It is a book I will continue to recommend to others from this moment forward!
