Review: The Shining by Stephen King

Quotes: "She leaned into the fragrant, curling steam of the tea and wept. In grief and loss for the past, and terror of the future."

"It was here. Whatever Redrum was, it was here."

"Every hotel has its ghost? The Overlook had a whole coven of them."

"She was frightened even more by the sound of him than she had been by his silence,"

"He grasped at the strings of reality and held them tightly."

"In the world of real things, the hunt was beginning."

Review: Disgraced professor/writer Jack Torrance accepts the job of off-season caretaker of The Overlook Hotel out of desperation. He brings along his Wife, Wendy, and young son Danny, who is very special. The Hotel is old and has quite the history. But something sinister lives within the Overlook, and it wants Danny.

Jack is unhinged and abusive from the beginning. Well before even arriving at the Overlook Hotel. Some of Jack's thoughts along the way are quite disturbing. Danny is a very special kid. His maturity, and abilities are supernatural. I felt for Wendy. Seemingly such a gentle person. Running away from her home life to marry Jack. Trying to raise Danny and save her marriage.
I really liked Hallorann, the cook, who befriended Danny.
Stephen King really succeeds in making the hotel itself a character, with a long and storied history.
The story burns away like a forgotten cigarette. Slowly but surely. The almost claustrophobic isolation when the weather turns cold. The terror of not knowing what's around the corner, or what's outside your locked door. Horror done well.
The best haunted house book I've read. Truly deserves the recognition it's gets.
