Kings of the Wyld by Nicholas Eames

5.0

An incredibly fun book, especially for fans of D&D! I truly enjoyed the humor and the humanity at play, as well as every fantasy reference Eames could throw at me. The idea of adventuring parties as bands with booking agents and frontmen and tours is phenomenal, and I only wish it could have been taken further.

For being a story about five (six with the villain?) men, I'm glad we got the women and queer characters we did - though more of the latter would have been great.

This is definitely a D&D-esque world and putting normal fantasy logic onto the fights made it feel pretty silly at times that our heroes come out alright while other characters die quickly by the dozens.

Additionally I think having one major plot element solved by sheer luck was a clever nod to the game, but two felt a little cheap to me.

Nonetheless I think this was a great book with remarkable characters, and I'm excited to get my hands on the sequel!
