3.5
This book has a really interesting premise, and the execution is pretty good, but the great plot hook and pretty good execution of said plot hook gets weighed down by a wordy heroine with an overdeveloped case of side character syndrome who would benefit from sitting down and thinking about what she could actually do (and then doing it) rather than talking about not knowing what to do. Beyond the somewhat wordy declarations of her own futility, the book is quite interesting. Some of the side characters are a real treat and i enjoyed the complicated court intrigued painted in the book.
Minor: Homophobia
A side character is presented as bisexual. This isn't a problem for the main character, but there are a few mentions of his sexuality creating problems for his marriage prospects at court, i.e. very subtle homophobia.
