How do you review a book like this? There is absolutely nothing I could possible add to the many (far more qualified and articulate) voices who’ve lauded it over the decades. All I will say is, I have never read such a beautiful, unapologetic celebration of Black language and culture. The voices in this story, speaking in their rich and colorful vernacular, provide some of the most vividly poetic dialogue I’ve ever read, even when all they’re doing is sitting on the porch, playfully picking on one another. This story is a gift, and although not meant for me, I feel privileged to have experienced it.
