The Newlyweds by Nell Freudenberger

tough to review. this author did an immense amount of research, and approached the subject matter carefully/with respect. i appreciate that. there are some awkward moments - there is a snippet where two bangali men speak to one another openly, in the presence of their wives & daughters, about the gendered violence against women committed during the war. i doubt any bangali author would write it that way, because it wouldn't happen.

in general i find this sort of narrative heartbreaking but human. there are a lot of conflicted reviews about this book & to those i say: i don't think you get it, but i don't think the author entirely does either. nonetheless a very delicate piece of fiction.
