Dragonfruit by Makiia Lucier

adventurous fast-paced

2.0

The concept and worldbuilding in Dragonfruit is one of the more compelling ones within YA Fantasy. Inspired by the culture and mythology of the Pacific Islands, Dragonfruit touches upon other themes such as conservation and animal poaching (the dragoners who hunt seadragons are loosely inspired by whalers).

Unfortunately, the writing was not strong enough to properly explore these themes. The prose was often redundant in both the spoken dialogue and within the narration. The characters themselves were quite flat and there were some plot discrepancies that I wish we had answers for.

Overall, I do encourage trying this book just to experience the unique world. I only wish the quality of the writing would be on par with the intriguing concept.
