My Dark Vanessa by Kate Elizabeth Russell

5.0

This book is dangerous, and it is not for everyone. it has lots of content warnings. I don't think this book should be recommended without people talking about the dark side of it.

Please read this, before you decide to read the book:

If you don't know what this book is about. We have Vanessa Wye, who was 15 years old when she first had sex with her English teacher. Now when Venessa reached 32 years old the teacher Jacob Strain has been accused of sexual abuse by another former student. And journalist has asked Vanessa to contribute to a story about him. But no one seems to understand that what Vanessa and Strain had together wasn't abuse, it was love, wasn't it? because she is quite certain that the relationship she had with Strane wasn't abused. It was love. She's sure of that. Forced to rethink her past, to revisit everything that happened, Vanessa has to redefine the great love story of her life - her great sexual awakening - as rape. Now she must deal with the possibility that she might be a victim and just one of many.

I remember one of the quotes goes like this

"I can’t lose the thing I’ve held onto for so long, you know?”
My face twists up from the pain of pushing it out.
“I just really need it to be a love story, you know? I really, really need it to be that.”
“I know,” she says.
“Because if it isn’t a love story, then what is it”?
I look to her glassy eyes, her face of wide-open empathy.
“It’s my life,” I say. “This has been my whole life."

So this book was extremely heavy. And it was more like education for me. I learned a lot from it.
I give this book 5/5
