Eldest by Christopher Paolini

4.0

I know I’m super late to the game, but I just finished Eldest, and honestly, it was worth the wait! If you liked Eragon, this one takes everything up a notch. You get to see Eragon training with the elves (which is awesome), and the world-building really shines—there’s so much more depth to the politics and history of Alagaësia. Plus, Roran’s storyline adds a lot of emotional weight. He’s out there dealing with real-life struggles while Eragon is off becoming a Dragon Rider.

That said, it does drag a bit in places, especially during the training sequences, but the payoff is worth it. Paolini’s writing has definitely grown since the first book, even if it’s still a little over-descriptive at times. Late or not, I’m so glad I picked this up—it’s setting up some epic stuff for the rest of the series!
