Z for Zachariah by Robert C. O'Brien

dark slow-paced
  • Plot- or character-driven? Character
  • Loveable characters? It's complicated
  • Diverse cast of characters? No

2.5

Z for Zachariah is like if the farmer's almanac had a threesome with an edgy apocalypse potboiler novel and a streetcar named desire (but only the creepy abuse bits.)

Additionally, i love that the line "Ann Burden, you'll wish I'd never come here," is uttered by the guy who turns out to have murdered his friend for wanting to go see if his family was dead and then abuses and attempts to rape Ann, a sixteen year old who nursed him back to health after he made the extremely stupid decision to run fully nude into a random river without checking radiation levels. spoiler, the river turned out to be extremely radioactive.
