One Piece, Vol. 40: Gear by Eiichiro Oda

adventurous emotional funny fast-paced

5.0

In Volume 40, the Strawhats continue their assault on Enies Lobby! Luffy's running around like a madman trying to find Robin, but soon encounters Blueno, a powerful CP9 agent who can use the Six-Powers fighting style like everyone else in their group. Normally, I'm not super engrossed in fight scenes, but seeing Luffy push his body further to save Robin was touching! He literally starts steaming and enters another 'Gear', so he'll be stronger for his friends. That was literally epic and caught even Blueno off guard! Apart from that, the rest of CP9 is still a threat, especially since Kalifa and Kaku have now been given devil fruits. One thing to mention is that the head of CP9, Spandam, is absolutely vile. He's in a position of power even though he's weak and unskilled, but can use his much more powerful subordinates however he wants! Unfortunately, that's quite the parallel to real life.

Everyone else is still in various parts of the island. Usopp unfortunately gets left behind by accident (sorry Usopp it was a bit funny 😂) but encounters the two Giants who are meant to guard the gates. Since he aspires to become a great warrior like the Giants of Elbaph, this perfectly suited his character! Nami, Sanji, Zoro and Chopper are trying to reach the courthouse. With every force in Enies Lobby mobilized, it's tough work. I love how these serious situations always have funny moments as well, such as Zoro going the wrong way (again) and Nami's thunder attack accidentally hitting Sanji and Zoro!
