An excellent start to a new series. A brilliantly developed world with a complex religio-political landscape.

The narrative moves between a few perspectives, primarily Hatushaly and his two friends Hava and Donte training at a school in the Hidden Nation, and Declan, a young man living in the Covenant lands finishing his mastery as a smith.

The focus of the plot is on Hatu's identity, his background a mystery to himself and most who knows him. Why is he, clearly a foreigner, being permitted the training he is receiving? What will become of him once he comes of age and finishes his training?

Fascinating characters, brilliant world, great build-up to some sort of upcoming conflict that could change the whole world.
