Secrets and Fries at the Starlight Diner by Helen Cox

4.0

Secrets & Fries at the Starlight Diner is a brilliant combination of chick-lit and mystery. There are all the hallmarks of the building and maintenance of relationships as well as the mystery behind Bonnie’s arrival.

Secrets & Fries at the Starlight Diner opens with Bonnie’s arrival at the Starlight Diner where she is seeking out Esther, an old friend who she is hoping is going to provide her with a roof over her head for a few days. However Esther is actually in England and not returning until the next day. This leaves Bonnie in a predicament as she has hardly any money and no where to stay as such she’s weighing up the prospect of a night riding the subway.

It is clear from this initial introduction that Bonnie is running away from someone but we have no idea why.

I really liked Bonnie’s character from the outset, she’s ballsy but also vulnerable and in need of some help. She’s aware of the fact that she’s got herself into a bit of a pickle but is trying to get sorted whilst protecting those around her. Along the way we meet Jimmy, another character I liked although not sure I’m was supposed to at the start however I felt there was more to him than his frosty and cocky demeanour.

What I loved most about this book was its setting, I really want to visit the Starlight Diner and experience its retro feel. The descriptions of the decor and food were fabulous alongside all the music references – I felt like I was transported to a real 1950’s Diner!

This is a gorgeous read and I hope to return to the Starlight Diner again!
