Eternal Kiss of Darkness by Jeaniene Frost
3.0
'Eternal Kiss of Darkness' was an interesting book, but not my favourite from the Night Huntress World series. Like always, Jeaniene Frost sets up the story for a Vampire/Human relationship to unfold, and nothing is smooth sailing for the couple.
I was a little reluctant to read the book. Mencheres was never a favourite of mine. Like Cat, I always found him a little creepy. But he improved in my eyes along the way. I guess that was to be expected since he was a main character this time. I loved seeing how Mencheres and Kira became an item. Meeting Kira was really fun. She is a fierce and extremely loyal woman. Seeing Kira adjust to life as a vampire was really cool. We haven't really seen a new vamp controlled by blood lust, and I'm sort of glad she had trouble at first, because the other new vampires we've come across in the Night Huntress books seem to get over being 'new' too quickly.
Despite the book being full of action and certainly romance, I found towards the end it became a bit repetitive. Kira and Mencheres were continuously arguing about Mencheres's ability to see the future and whether he should stay alive. As part of character development, I thought these moments were essential for Mencheres. It seemed like something that could have occurred earlier in the book, leaving more room for the confrontation with Radjedef, which was wrapped up too quickly.
I was a little disappointed with the lack of Cat and Bones in the story. I realise that they weren't happy with Mencheres at the time, but for the amount of time and importance they had the in the book they might as well have been left out of it completely. Kira's instant dislike of them for disagreeing with Mencheres annoyed me. She'd known him for a couple of weeks and knew nothing of Cat and Bones's history with Mencheres, and yet judged them for not falling over themselves to help him. I was glad to see Vlad made an appearance, but he too had such a tiny role that it was almost not needed.
I did enjoy the book and I'm glad I read it. But it's definitely not the best in the series.
3.5/5 stars.
