Uncanny Collateral by Brian McClellan

4.0

I've been a fan of urban fantasy for awhile, and I'm also a fan of Brian McClellan (I loved his flintlock fantasy series, the Powder Mage series), and this was _pretty good_. It's functionally a short story (about 150 pages), and has an intriguing set-up. But as much as I like urban fantasy, I've found I'm *really picky about it.* For example, if this were a full-sized novel, I'd probably down it to 3* rather than 4*, I don't love Kevin Hearne's stuff (even though I think he's talented), and much of the urban fantasy literature that's popped up recently has felt a bit too much like "clones of Jim Butcher or Supernatural." This isn't the case here, but it's not up to snuff for his powder mage work. It's a quick read though, and I'll check out the next one to see how it develops!
