Nightwing, Vol. 1: Leaping into the Light by Tom Taylor

4.0

At first, I worried that a wealthy Dick Grayson would take away the focus of him protecting the streets from every day crime yet as I kept reading I became more fond of the idea. It's a twist on the Bruce Wayne perspective of being a rich vigilante. We see him figure out how we can best help the little guy and the whole of Bludhaven as both Nightwing and Dick and I'm interested to see how this will play out.

The villian Heartless and Mayor Zucco both initially appeared to me as new generic characters who get brought into the story from nowhere but again, after a few more issues, I grew to like them.

With a design mixing Yokai from Big Hero 6 and Red X from the Teen Titans show, I felt I had seen this character a thousand times. Heartless hasn't been shown off too much so far and where the volume ends, I'm interested to see if maybe Dick will have to fight this battle without his suit.

Melinda Zucco has a much more interested backstory than I expected from the earlier pages. It's quite the risk revealing a new relation to a long-established character but I think there's a lot of potential for her character as long as it doesn't divert too much for the sake of shock and misdirection.

This is a great start to what I hope is a great run by Taylor. Bruno Redondo's art pops with so much life and colour that I could watch Dick just do menial tasks all day and it would be worth it. I hope the next issues keep it up!
