Thrum by Meg Smitherman

dark mysterious tense fast-paced
  • Plot- or character-driven? A mix
  • Strong character development? Yes
  • Loveable characters? It's complicated

I never thought I’d be afraid of a pathos, but here we are.

Straight away Smitherman creates a hopeless, dreary and otherwise uncomfortable atmosphere the moment Amie is awake in a desolate ship in the middle of fucking nowhere in space.

Saved by an unknown entity
a really hot one said to look like Ben Barnes (honestly, who could complain about that?)
and given quarters and space to fix her ship, Amie begins to have the sense of being here before.

Smitherman is unrelenting in her pacing, making sure the reader can’t take a breath or become too comfortable. We are just as disorientated as Amie and when it hits fever point and secrets come to light, you can do nothing but sit there, gobsmacked.
