Mediated Intimacy: Sex Advice in Media Culture by Laura Harvey, Meg-John Barker, Rosalind Gill
I loved the perspective the authors wrote from: trying to write about sex advice and narratives in media that instruct on sexuality without repeating or reinforcing oppressive or prescriptive narratives. But ultimately I think the book struggled with the sheer scope of work that it tried to analyze. Sex advice columns, pop culture sexologists, but also social media, fiction, government messaging, and other types of media. It was too much to analyze all of these with the depth necessary to draw conclusions overall. Not an uninteresting read, but I wish the scope had been narrower and the book more cohesive.
