What a beautiful, wonderful world George R. R. Martin has created. I’ve never read something that comes alive on the page quite so well as Westeros and Essos and everything else. It is a vivid creation, with colourful, lively characters. I eat the fruit Daenerys’ tastes in Qarth, I mourn the death of a father with the Starks, I huddle in the rain with Catelyn, I walk the streets of King’s Landing with Tyrion. I have fought in battles, in birthing beds, in marriages. I have eaten every food I could have possibly eaten at feasts, markets, and around cookfires; I have starved, walking barefoot across the Riverlands. I have felt the heat of dragonflame and the scorching sun of the Great Waste; I have frozen to death beyond the Wall with my Sworn Brothers. It is real. I am there.
