A Song of Wraiths and Ruin by Roseanne A. Brown
3.0
Hmmm… 3.5stars!
I think it’s me. This was well written with engaging characters, sent on an impossible mission, completely ill informed, as the world around them uses them as pawns. It also gave off Aladdin vibes.
The story was formulaic, set up as most of this genre! Royal Girl, Riffraff Boy, set on a collision course. They meet and ‘fall in love’! Blah blah blah… Insurrection! Deceit! Betrayal! Blah blah blah! It added in an interesting, albeit confusing, magic system. You don’t really learn much about it and by the end I only had a rough estimate of the two factions presented.
I had most of the plot figured out, because it’s always THAT ONE! But the way the author got to the reveal was interesting.
I dunno, I think it’s me. These YA fantasy books are really hit or miss. Some blow me away and others leave me wanting. Am I wanting enough to pick up its sequel, I’m not sure. Not right now. Meh.
I kinda feel bad for this review as the story was fine… I was just bored and slightly out of touch with it. It’s me. Sigh…
