The Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger

4.0

“don’t ever tell anybody anything. if you do, you start missing everybody.”
groundbreaking discovery, this very niche underground book is really good!!! who knew!!!
but actually when i first read (half of) this at 13, i thought it was so boring and while there were still parts
i felt were a bit boring/or that dragged on (his long ramblings about unimportant details) overall i loved it.
holden caulfield is misunderstood by all you freaks! he is everything to me. he is so sad and so depressing and he hates everyone, but he loves his siblings so much. his love for phoebe literally made me want to cry at times, i love sibling relationships. and don’t even get me started on allie, literally try not to cry challenge.
holden is young and he’s grieving and he hates everyone, except that he doesn’t hate everyone. he’s in fact very empathetic & has deep understandings & love for the people & world around him. the way he feels such tenderness for complete strangers and how he justifies the cruel actions of those around him is astounding considering the way he has been betrayed by his authority figures.
in the end it’s his love for phoebe and her love for him that saves him and it’s so so very beautiful and amazing to me. and it DOES hit close to home :)
and i also really like the aspect that had to do with school, as someone who has a bad relationship with school & often feels like a failure, it’s nice to read about someone who failed out of multiple schools, but who loves knowledge. i love the way education was described, how it sometimes sucks and you have to deal with annoying teachers & peers, but when you find that motivation & passion for something you will work through those hardships and come out with something more than just a diploma or academic education. and the message that as alone as you feel, you aren’t alone & you can learn from those before you and in turn teach those after you. i just loved this. it felt very comforting and hopeful, but also very somber and melancholy.
really sad to think how he wants to be ‘the catcher in the rye’ and save kids & protect their innocence because he lost his (by way of losing his brother at a young age, feeling constantly ignored, and in my interpretation, being groomed and experiencing CSA). he really is such a tragic character.
he didn’t want to disappear, he just wanted to be heard :(
i truly didn’t think i was going to love this as much as i did. also if your looking for a somewhat similar (actually) underrated movie, watch Igby Goes Down <33
