An Heir Comes to Rise by Chloe C. Peñaranda

2.0

DNF at 40%, skimmed through the rest of the book.
Slight spoilers but only for the start and not any plot points.

I couldn’t care less about the main characters. Faythe is bland and makes dumb decisions. Nik is there I guess.

There was interesting world building but there wasn’t any follow up. A mythical stag leads you to an ancient temple in the middle of the haunted forest? Awesome tell me more. But no, she ignores it and goes back to training and doesn’t think about it again. The rest of the plot is just her daily life. Give me the cool mythical stuff! Why introduce it and then not use it?

I just stopped reading when Faythe made the decision to be in illegal fighting rings where people and Fae would bet on her, after she was told specifically NOT to stand out. She has magical mind powers and recognisable eyes and sword. Why would it be a good idea to draw more attention to yourself by fighting in the rings? She doesn’t even do it for a specific reason, like needing the money. She just decides to fight. Huh???

I read some other reviews on this and the next books and I didn’t feel like continuing this series. Too bad because it’s been on my tbr for a while and I was looking forward to it.

World building was interesting but should have been explored more, that might have saved the book a bit. But honestly Faythe and Nik were just meh. I liked Marlowe and Jakon but that was it. I liked that it was the start of a found family though, no unnecessary drama and that made me very happy.

Disappointed. I don’t recommend this book and will not continue this series.
