Legend by Marie Lu

3.0

The book is fast-paced and doesn’t waste any time getting to the best bits. It’s a super fun and exciting read. The downside of this is that some plot lines aren’t really built up to, they just… happen. For me, the romance feels out of place given the high level of drama and world-changing stakes, but I think that speaks more to my misplaced priorities than the book’s quality LOL.

I solved the crime in the first few chapters which means I’m probably a really great detective with a perfect score on my Trial and I can’t wait to be recruited by the Patriots and/or Republic, y’know, whichever.

EDIT: (content warning for c*vid)
I was marinating on what the themes of this book could be, and I realized C*vid has subconsciously colored my interpretation in many ways. Aspects such as the hacker boy claiming he discovered the “plague” is controlled by the government and intrigue relating to vaccines just read differently now, and I’m curious how my own reaction to this book would have been different if I’d read it prior to 2020.
