I picked this up after seeing it pitched on TikTok. This is definitely a dark romance, and if you do not like cheating, this is not the book for you.
When Charlie was 18, she started to have a secret affair with her best friend's older brother, Lex. Lex was in an unhappy marriage at the time and told Charlie he would leave his wife so they could finally be together. That never happened. Now, ten years later, Charlie is running her own successful law firm, and has just been proposed to by a wonderful man. Lex still haunts Charlie's nightmares, but Charlie finally feels ready to move forward...until she runs into Lex at a restaurant in NYC. Now Lex thinks he has his second chance and Charlie does not know what to do.
I knew there was cheating in this book before I started reading it, but I did not expect Charlie to treat Julian, her fiancĂ©, so poorly. Charlie blatantly lies to Julian and strings him along because she is not sure if she can trust Lex. The whole situation really got under my skin, and I wanted to slap Charlie; if she wants to be with Lex, then break it off with Julian, she should not be trying to have her cake and eat it too. Lex was also insufferable to read. He CANNOT take no for an answer and is relentless in pursuing Charlie. They are both toxic people who make poor choices, but I still enjoyed reading from them. I am a sucker for a second chance romance, and I was rooting for them. They are both very broken, but I think they would be good for each other.
I was not expecting this book to be a series, but I am intrigued to continue because "Chasing Love" ends in a major cliffhanger.
