The Square by Marguerite Duras

4.0

‘The Square’ is a novella that is almost all just one conversation between two people in a park. He is a traveling salesman whose work barely keeps him above the poverty line. It is not a comfortable or desirable life , but he is resigned to it. She works as a servant cooking meals and looking after her aging mistress. She is unhappy with her life and dreams that one day a man will sweep her off her feet, and help her escape this drudgery. She has hope. She seeks change, but it is change that she needs others to bring about. Wonderful piece about the hopelessness and absurdity of humanity.
