The Husky & His White Cat Shizun: Erha He Ta De Bai Mao Shizun (Novel) Vol. 2 by Rou Bao Bu Chi Rou

2.5

These books are... very messed up and all the characters are awful in different ways (except Shi Mei, who deserves better). I'm invested in the mystery and the world, but unfortunately not in the main pairing. (their relationship is very not healthy).

I thought Volume 1 was a lot more engaging and I struggled a bit in getting through Volume 2. I still plan to read Volume 3, but I'm hoping we see some growth from these characters. Mo Ran was a tyrant who did unspeakable acts in his past life and he seems to want to be different, but he keeps acting in ways that hurt others (the sexual violence is particularly disturbing). Chu Wanning is already learning to be more gentle and open with others, but he is ultimately in a position of power over Mo Ran (who is a minor still, even if his soul/brain isn't!) so it feels icky for him to entertain feelings towards Mo Ran (which he seems to acknowledge, but still...)

I guess we'll see where things go in Volume 3!
