At this point, I don’t know if it’s too early to conclude that a Peace Adzo Medie novel equals drama, suspense and a serious need to rant when a reader is done. 😂😂
Human beings are complex, because there’s so much that drives our thoughts, actions and feelings that we haven’t even figured out yet or accepted. I think all the important female characters in this book had a lot of complexities with left them with a serious MC syndrome and as such perspective was everything.
I loved that we got to hear from both girls eventually, because Selasi’s POV is really what anchors the story. I struggled a lot with Akofa’s POV. It was obvious that she was a very unreliable narrator. Her mother did quite the number on her but I saw through her attempts to paint her mother as the victim in the fall out with Selasi from the get go. When shit hit the fan at the end, I was disappointed that no one told her how little difference there is between her and Lucy. In fact, I don’t believe that Akofa’s stance on the matter would have been so different from that of her mother, if ‘it’ hadn’t happened to her too.
Was the thesis like ending necessary? I don’t think so, but I had a really fun time listening to this book.
