Malpertuis by Jean Ray

Man, this was so good. At first, it seems like a gothic haunted house story, but the grand reveal is about the family’s history. The story is excellent, and it’s written in an interesting way—utilizing old notes and also a first person narrative. Jean Ray gives just enough description to instill terror in the reader but doesn’t try to explain everything and ruin the effect. It’s filled with some mind-blowing imagery. There honestly isn’t a single dull moment to this book, and I don’t think the ending would be easily guessable for most people.
