One True King by Soman Chainani

i am so happyyy! i was very eager to read this book as i had only heard good things and it is, after all, the conclusion to a series of books i’ve been intrigued with since i was like nine, perhaps younger. it did not disappoint. the characters and the story has come such a long way from the beautiful tale of two girls dropped into the woods that i was enchanted by so many years ago, but in the absolute best way possible.
i loved sophie from the beginning. she was always my favourite character (with dot a close second) and it upset me to see her get hurt again and again. i wasn’t super enthusiastic about the idea of hort and sophie until the fifth book, i think, when he was with nicola. much like sophie, it was hard for me to see how right they were for each other until that wasn’t really possible anymore. my conviction for their happily ever after only grew throughout this book and i was shocked that it actually seemed to happen, until all my plans were foiled. hort was seemingly dead; mia. i was 90% sure he was alive - we hadn’t come all this way for nothing, but i couldn’t be sure. i’d been wrong before. i was very stressed, considering i was actually lying on the beach in the sun, reading. luckily, i was right, hort emerged right at the end, giving us the happy ending we all needed.
i was also obsessed with the coven this book. my love for dot only grew and i discovered a new ship - hester and anadil. the only thing i dislike is that they didn’t actually get married, or even confirm their relationship. but i know. let’s be honest though, all the witches were amazing. sophie (obviously), thwarting her mind control and getting herself out of another horrible situation with an evil prince; the lady of the lake (i guess technically she’s a sorceress but whatever), she just y’know helped good with everything she had; evelyn sader (even beyond the grave), with that incredible dress. i want a dress like that.
i really hated reena’s brother (i can’t remember his name right now but he doesn’t really deserve my memory, does he) and, as always, i wasn’t a big fan of tedros but, like they always do, the girls shone in this book. i was glad to have kiko back, enjoyed meeting betty, despite her tragic death, and loved that the queen of jaunt jolie replaced her knights with women, because they were clearly superior fighters.
also can we talk about how great merlin was?
overall, the conclusion to the school for good and evil series was probably even better than i expected it to be, and believe me, i had high expectations. everything was cleared up, everyone’s stories were resolved, and the ending was so perfectly open-ended. i really envy soman chainani’s mind.
