Open Book by Jessica Simpson

4.0

When it comes to celebrity memoirs, they can be fairly hit or miss, depending on the intention of the writer and whether or not the celebrity even wrote their own book. In this particular case, Simpson's voice comes through clearly, and she is able to showcase her writing skills in a charming and vulnerable way. As an avid fan of Newlyweds when it was playing on MTV, I was, just like the rest of the audience, rooting for the seemingly picture-perfect life and relationship between Jessica and Nick. No one's marriage should have that much pressure placed on it, and in this case, the public nature of their relationship was definitely a contributing factor to its eventual downfall.

She doesn't stray from difficult and controversial topics, and she provides a rare glimpse into the real-life of celebrities and the price of fame. She delves deeply into the complicated relationship she has with her parents, their support, and the ways in which they have disappointed her.

Even though Simpson is not the most gifted writer, you can feel her heart come through on these pages. It sounds like her voice, and I commend her for letting us see her true self in this book.
