Funny Story by Emily Henry

5.0

Well, here we are again. Another year, another Emily Henry book completely consuming my life. Just like all her others, I wanted to inhale this and make it last forever - which of course meant that I finished it in a day because I couldn’t put it down.

While I wouldn’t put this at the top of my EmHen list (which honestly doesn’t mean much because they’re all 5 star reads for me), this cast of characters might be at the top for me. At the very least, Miles is absolutely my favorite of her men - the Nick Miller man of my dreams with more earnestness and innate kindness. Daphne also is pretty high up there because I felt like so many parts of her were incredibly relatable.

The two of them together were EVERYTHING. The chemistry and banter between them was so, so good and I was begging for them to be together the entire time. The way their friendship and relationship progressed felt so natural, and I think the concept of the plot set this all up so well. I also really appreciate how this book didn't go too far with the fake dating trope; it was used as a device to add some good tension and build up at points, but it didn't rely that aspect much.

I also absolutely loved the found family aspect. The supporting cast and the small town vibe felt similar to both Beach Read and Book Lovers, and I loved how Henry has been exploring adult female friendships more with this and Happy Place.

If I have one complaint, it’s that Peter and Petra felt a little less fleshed out and not like real people. It was hard to imagine either Daphne or Miles with them at some points, which made the stakes feel a little lower. Some aspects, like Starfire, also felt a little over the top at times. All in all, pretty minor, issues for me though.

TLDR; no surprise at all - I loved this, I'm sad I'm done with it, and I live for Daphne and Miles.
