Locke & Key: Master Edition, Volume Three by Joe Hill

5.0

This is it. The end of Locke and Key. It was a hell of a journey, and now that I'm at the finish line, I have to agree that this might be the greatest thing Joe Hill has ever written.

Joe and his partner in crime Gabriel Rodriguez have definitely saved the best for last. The fifth volume of this series is jam packed with revelations about the origins and history of Keyhouse and the keys, while the sixth brings the present day story to a pulse pounding conclusion.

My only quibble with this final pair of volumes is with the fifth one. I do wish, in hindsight, that the revelations in this book had been interspersed throughout the story - at least enough of them for readers to keep up with the plot. What Tyler, Kinsey and we the readers see with the time shift key informs practically every little detail of what's been going on.

Most importantly, it's only now that Dodge's motives make sense. He talks about the omega key a lot, but it's weird that we had to wait this long to finally find out what the omega key's function was and why he wanted it.

Meanwhile, as much as I enjoyed the previous pair of volumes, they were pretty light on plot. I enjoy every second I get to spend with the Locke family, but it sure felt like the series was spinning its wheels a bit.

That quibble aside, though, I don't know what else to tell you. Locke and Key is brilliant. Go and read it right now.
