Tokyo Ghoul: re, Vol. 10, by Sui Ishida

4.0

Loads of cool new developments here, with battle lines being drawn and tactics getting drastic. Furuta's plan
Spoilerto mix humans in with the clowns
is so underhanded; I like how he's snuck in as a villain. (What was with that
Spoilerdream of breeding Rize even though you used to like her
, though...)

We finally catch up with Kaneki again here. I like how the new directions his arc is taking always hark back to moments in the earlier series. He comes up with a plan involving
Spoilerdonning white suits (and looks so good while he does, I must say)
, and it continues the whole playing-the-lead-role-in-a-play analogy he's associated with. It also recalls his torture by Yamori. The confrontation with Naki was overdue and nicely done. I also appreciate that Kaneki's lingering trauma is addressed in
Spoilerhis response to the smell of RC suppressant, which they have to retrieve in order to save Akira
.

Special mention again to Urie's character development. In this volume, he
Spoilerrisks turning into a ghoul permanently by allowing Higemaru to escape while he confronts Donato alone
. I didn't like him at first, but he's come a long way and become yet another character I am rooting for.

One thing that does bother me is the way gay characters are represented. We have Nico making a reappearance - I've mentioned him before - and there was also a bizarre scene where
SpoilerMatsuri Washuu strips naked as he declares he might be in love with Urie because Urie is behaving like a dog, flattering him and being subservient (with a hidden aim to manipulate him, of course)
. I mean, what the hell?
