I wish the characters were a little more diverse by skin color.

The northerners have dark skin and are seen as demons by the southerners. While the northerners are actually not demons or villains, the author mentions their skin tone quite frequently and it honestly doesn't do anything for the story. 

Otherwise, I really loved this book and will read th sequel when it comes out. But I am white-passing. So it might not bother me as much as others.
