The Awakening by Caroline Peckham, Susanne Valenti

This series is described as the ‘adult Harry Potter’ and that truly needs to stop because it is incredibly inaccurate. The only accurate comparison is MCs are orphans from the magical world whose parents were rich and now they’re going to a magical school in a magical world. I know that sounds like they’re incredibly similar, but if you start reading this book, you’ll understand how small of a comparison that is.
The MCs don’t get a whimsical letter informing them of who they truly are. They get a weird teacher with mind controlling abilities forcing them come with him. They don’t get magical moment with a talking hat to help them determine their path at school. They raise their hands if they feel a tingly sensation after a different teacher proclaims some words in Latin. Immediately after they’re sorted, they meet their Draco Malfoys in the form of four unrealistically attractive, physically abusive sexual predators. One of the MCs is bitten on the neck, and the teachers just stand there hopelessly staring while he sucks her blood, and apparently, her magic from her body.
If you’re wanting the adult version of the whimsical world of Harry Potter, this isn’t going to be it. I couldn’t even bring myself to rate it, I was so put off and disappointed.
