I finally finished reading it. It only took me a month and few more days to so.
I picked it up 'cause my only bookish friend or maybe my only friend right now was just constantly swooning over this book while reading it. I wanted to join her in her excitement and surprise her with my current read. Little did I know that she'll be finished before I even get to chapter 5.
She read it in 3 days and I took well a month to read this. It has nothing to do with the book or it's pacing. I am just more of a procrastinator than a reader.
Me taking a month to read a YA contemporary doesn't mean that the book was not good. It was good. More than good actually. I almost cried when I read the author's note in the beginning. I laughed at Mat's not always so good jokes. I felt sad for what Jules had to go through and what he was going through. I hated Jules' dad with every fiber of my being. His presence made me so uncomfortable and angry. I lived for Jules' sister and abuelo. And the friend group! Ofcourse the friend group! I wish I had friends like Jules had. The funny, kickass and supportive friends are everything.
As a queer person the reassurance the comfort and the hope that this world has many good people in comparison to the shitty ones means the world to me. And I love that young people (ha! as if I am so old. I am 19 and very foolish. But I am talking about younger teens) have this book to read. A book that'll bring hope and joy to them!
I also very much appreciated the rather humorous but important conversation around sex.
All in all this book is worth a read. It's not my favorite book of all time or anything but you wouldn't regret reading it! There's also a lot of food involved. So just have some snacks around.
