Before We Were Trans: A New History of Gender by Kit Heyam

5.0

I love how trans and gender history is shown through both general observations of cultures and time periods, and through the stories of specific people. Some I had heard of before, some I hadn't.

This book shows how trans history overlaps with the history of intersex, two-spirit and gay and lesbian history. It shows that gender and sex have never been static words with set meanings, but have changed depending on the time and place.

Great book if you want to learn more about queer history - not too heavy or academic, but not too basic either.
