Verity by Colleen Hoover

Did not finish book. Stopped at 14%.
I began this book and got to chapter 4 before deciding to just stop because this book is complete trash. I understand that some people love this book, and that’s great, you do you. But I found it, in my opinion, to be a complete waste of time, paper, thought, and effort.

The writing is amateur at best and the author is obviously writing a self insert of herself. The book begins with a man having his head crushed by a bus, and the man doesn’t matter. He’s just a plot device to show us how “hardened” and badass the main character Lowen is. It’s also the plot device used to meet our local misogynist/dreamboat love interest with a dark and tragic past.

Here’s a quote:  “it’s something I’ve been working on attempting to become as hardened as the concrete beneath my feet” page 3. When a character is literally telling you what she’s feeling instead of showing, you know it’s gonna be a long ride.

Along with the amateur writing are sentences that literally make so sense whatsoever.

“Spent the past over a decade building her brand”

“Allowing his words to percolate.” Someone found the thesaurus feature on word and just went to town. Didn’t even stop to look into what the word means or consider that it’s nonsensical in this context. It looks fancy, let’s use it!

“She has over a decade years’ worth of notes and outlines.”
Obviously Hoover doesn’t know what a decade is. She must struggle with time.

If the writing doesn’t make sense, it’s just complete and utter bullshit. No one would say some of the shit said in this book.

Pg 8 wow what a pick up line. “I pulled my dead eight year olds body out of a lake 5 weeks ago. Wow, how could she not want him? They literally just met an hour ago and this is his conversation starter?

Hoover states she has not had much tragedy in her life and needed to “use her imagination” to write from the perspective of a man who has just been through so much. Maybe not do that?? Maybe don’t trivialize true tragedy that you obviously can’t even comprehend to sell this mediocre garbage?? Maybe just stop writing altogether? Who knows?

Hoover does not deserve to be published, she does not deserve any of the fame or notoriety attached to her name, and honestly I don’t fucking deserve this torture.

I am proudly DNFing this “book” at chapter four, adding Colleen Hoover to my “fuck no how is this shit published?”  List, and returning this book to target IMMEDIATELY so I can get my $10 back.

If you enjoy Hoover, good for you, Enjoy it. But that is not my experience and I’m frankly offended by the 4 stars this book has. It’s in my humble opinion, complete and utter TRASH.
