The Devil Wears Prada by Lauren Weisberger

2.0

Having seen, and actually enjoyed, the movie long before reading this, I did read it with certain expectations and with the characters at least partially filled in (apart from the usual changes that Hollywood makes). And I think this may be the first time that I can say that I actually prefered the movie. In the book Andrea came across a lot more selfish than she does in the movie which did not endear me to her at all, not to mention how much fashion/make-up/brand info she seemed to know throughout. I much prefered the geeky non-fashion aware Andy of the movie, I certainly related to her a lot more. I'm also not sure about how she quit in the book, the venom seemed unnecessary and I can't believe it took her that long to make that decision given the circumstances, which are very different than the film. I do prefer the book Emily though as she is nicer and more human than the movie version, although I do like the cutting wit of both of them. Miranda is very similar in both but the movie does capture a bit more of her humanity than the book does, altthough it also gives her a lot more bite too. The writing is good though as long as you can ignore the designer name dropping (if you want to of course).
