As the first book in the Blackstone Affair series, there is little here that stands apart from the Fifty Shades/Crossfire variety. That said, I finished it in one sitting with a needy twitch for more. There seemed to be more sex in this one than the genre norm, but I welcome this so long as there is a richness in the story and characters. The book is short so the desired depth is out of reach, but we're told the heroine is running from a traumatized past. Unfortunately, the details are omitted. Her ambiguous fear of commitment has a possible political link, but I'm leaping to make this connection. So, we're left trusting the author. When the conflict, the heart of the story, is finally revealed, I pray to hell it's complex enough to be worth the wait. Because if it's just another rendition in the Fifty Shades parade, I'll be sorely disappointed. Given the quality of writing, I optimistically--and impatiently--await the next installment.
