Eragon by Christopher Paolini

4.0

The sole reason why I gave this book 4 stars is because it had the ability keep me hooked to it even though I realised reading the very 1st line that I was throwing myself in to something mediocre. Paoloni's writing is rather simple, unsophisticated and almost childlike, given that he wrote it during his mid teens. (Yet it is much better than Stephanie Meyer at her finest.) At the beginning he takes much effort in to describing the nature, the surroundings in an elaborate, tedious manner that compels you to skip those bits right away. It is obvious he is highly influenced or if I put it indelicately (as almost everyone who's read this done) he has obviously 'stolen' ideas off of the greatest fantasies such as The Lord of the Rings. With its almost predictable plot and characterisation you find hardly anything of originality.

However if you overlook these faults, you still find something entertaining, something that makes you read it to the end.

I would recommended for those with a limited knowledge on fantasy to use it as a means of expanding the knowledge, for those who have just begun to discover the genre to be enamoured by the pure enchanting beauty of mythology, and for children to get in to the habit of reading.
