Assistant to the Villain by Hannah Nicole Maehrer

4.0

This was so much fun πŸ˜‚ Minor spoilers ahead:

I knew the story had no spice and that it would be the slowest burn before going in, and so I just hoped that the tension was good, that the characters were easy to love, and that the book was funny, and I'm happy to say that I personally found all three of those things here. The tension was so good, to the point that The Villain's attachment felt so in-character for him, and the tension and familiarity and comfort between him and Evie was just so good. I loved Blade, I loved Tatiana, I even ended up really loving Becky and the relationship between her and Evie, I loved Lyssa, and I LOVED KINGSLEY! πŸ˜πŸ˜‚ He just... he has things figured out, you know? He just seems very wise πŸ™ˆπŸ€£

I will admit that for the first fifteen chapters or so, Evie's one-liners really weren't hitting it for me. Most of the book was in her POV, and sometimes she just felt a bit too stereotypically "bubbly" and "quirky," and it felt a little forced, to be honest. She was still a good character, it was just her humor that was painful, especially since everybody else was pretty funny. Still, around the halfway point, her jokes definitely started to win me over, and the more I got to know I her, the more I related to her. She's a very intelligent character, she's very compassionate, and her brand of villainy doesn't seem so bad, to be honest πŸ˜‚

Ughh I enjoyed so much about this book. I loved the love interest's real name (it's so dark fantasy prince-esque, I LOVED it), I loved how everyone kept calling him The Villain, I loved his "The Villain caught you" line (SWOON 🀀), and I love how atmospheric the book is. Every time Evie was back at work, I just felt safe, you know? That, for me in a magical world, is a MUST. There has to be a comforting space, and Massacre Manor just had that feel... I realize as I type this out the sheer irony of that statement, but it's true.

This book was tons of fun, exactly what I was hoping for, and I'm so glad I decided to pick it up. If you're looking for a good time, loveable characters, and some creative magical powers, then I highly recommend this.
