SPQR: A History of Ancient Rome by Mary Beard

5.0

Fantastic. It’s textbook-like and I mean that in a good way. It informed without boring me, and was methodical without tedium. The number of photos, diagrams, and illustrations accompanying the text offered important visual aids that gave depth to the quantity of research Beard lays out. It’s not short—I read it over the course of several weeks in fits and starts—but it is remarkable and worth the time if you have even a passing interest.
