Mom & Me & Mom by Maya Angelou

4.0

I read this after falling in love with I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings. Maya Angelou’s writing is so touching and beautiful. Her life is full of both love and pain. She has such a warm heart for people around her and holds no resentment, even when they mistreat her awfully.

Situating herself as a mother and a daughter is the focus of this memoir. She touches on some of the elements that make raising children while poor extremely difficult. She also talks about the strains of marrying a narcissistic white man and the sacrifices it entails.

There is a fair amount of repetition of events from I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings, but I acknowledge that this allows Mom & Me & Mom to stand alone rather than exist solely as part of a series of memoirs.
